Club Captains Report
I was elected Club Captain for Manukorihi for the 2018 golf season
This is my second year in the club captain’s position and my third year on the clubs committee.
The first year was a big learning curve for me and I would like to thank the more experienced and long term members of the Manukorihi Golf Club for all the help and advice that they have given me in the last two years.
This is a breakdown of the year as I have seen it and I think it has been another success story for the Manukorihi Golf Club.
We opened the season on January 27th 2018.
The first competition of 2018 season was the Purdie Cup and the winner for this year was Greg Fowler who defeated Robert Butler in the final.
The opening day competition was the Bridge Cup and this was won by three golfers Helen Watt / Don Bowers / Gary Fulton.
On Sunday the 28th January we had the Forman Trophy which was won by the Manukorihi No 2 Team of Paul Rauputu /Nathan Loppy /Dom Squatriti /Paul Fairhurst /Robert Butler /Steven Voyle with a team Net score of 850.
The Meiklejohn Cup for Best Individual Net over 36 holes was won by Paul Fairhurst on 135 closely followed by Robert Butler on 136.
The Manukorihi No 2 team of Jody Bound / Darren Lewis /Richard Hamel /Brian Bellamy / Robbie Buseing / Wayne Hall won the prize for the Best Gross Team Score of 984.
Congratulations to both Manukorihi teams for the successful defense of the Forman Trophy.
It has been decided this year by the match committee to change the format of the Forman trophy for 2019 to only one round of eighteen holes.
This is to encourage more team entry’s as the last couple of years we have only had approx. eight to ten teams compete for the Forman Trophy.
At this year’s Club captains meeting the consensus was that a lot of players don’t like the 36-hole format any more as the day is too long and hot and very tiring for some players.
On Saturday 4th February we had the Barbara Sharrock Memorial Trophy.
This was won by Robin Broadmore / Nicole Mancer / Helen Watt.
On Sunday the 4th February the Senior Pennants and the Men’s Handicap Pennants competition started.
Manukorihi had one team in the senior pennants and two men’s handicap pennants teams.
The Manukorihi No 2 team made it to the semi-final against Pungarehu at the Stratford Golf Club.
Unfortunately Manukorihi lost the semi-final 4 / 5.
I would like to thank all the pennant players that put their hands up to play this year and represent Manukorihi.
On Saturday 17th February we had the Hone Heke Eclectic Cup.
Winner for 2018 was Murray Peterson with overall Nett 59.
Bleakly Tray winner for 2018 was Mike Burkhart.
It was decided by the match committee to bring forward the Men’s Stroke play champs to start earlier in the year when the weather was better and to encourage bigger fields.
I think this was a success and the plan is to do the same in 2019.
The Final of the stroke play champs was played on Saturday 24th March.
Senior Mens Champion Carey Hobbs /Intermediate Champions Kingston Taylor Voyle/ Kerry Edgcombe / Junior Champion Asoese Se’e, / Limits Champion Carl Beale.
The Split Sixes Competition on the 28th March was won by Richard Ransfield / Peter Loppy.
The De-Brett Cup on the 7th April was won by Tiaki Tamihana / Trevor Hughes.
On Saturday 14th April was the start of the Mens Matchplay Champs which was played over four rounds.
Senior Matchplay Champion Carey Hobbs / Intermediate Champion Bruce Taylor / Junior John Davey / Limits Tony McDowell.
The Joll Cup was won by Robert Middleton over Bruce Taylor 3 / 2 .
The Lye Trophy was won by Darryl Baird & Joy East and a total of $386 was raised for the Lye family to donate to their chosen charity.
The LF Truman Memorial Trophy was won by Don Bowers.
We had the Kiwi Butchers Open Tournament on the 26th August.
We had a field of eighty-six golfers in our most popular Tournament of the year and it was a great day had by all.
I would like to thank Kiwi Butchers for the sponsorship of the fantastic meat packs that went to the winners.
The Top Club Competition was played on the 23rd September.
Manukorihi was represented by Bryan Bellamy / Steven Voyle /David Butler /Joy East.
We had a change in the format for the Men’s Top Dog Competition with drawn partners.
The winners of the Men’s Top Dog Competition were Ian Titter /Phil Wilson.
The winners of the Mixed Top Dog Competition were Kevin & Nicole Mancer.
On the weekend of the 3rd November – 5th November was the Annual Men’s Tour.
A great weekend was had by all and well organized by the green jacket winner Paul Rauputu & Shane Weir.
On Saturday 17th November was the men’s Champion of Champions Competition at Te Ngutu.
The Manukorihi team was Darryl Baird / Brendon Dew / Kingston Taylor Voyle DNF.
Congratulations to Darryl for best Nett in the Senior Division and to Brendon for his seventh place overall.
The Manukorihi Cup was played on Finals day on the 1st December and was won by John Chandler.
The Barry Brown Memorial Trophy was won by John Van Der Leeden & Joy Andrews.
This year I will not be standing for the Club Captains position as I have a lot of other commitments in 2019 including my managers role at Nexans NZ.
I have enjoyed my time as club captain and getting to know some good people and making new friends and learning how a successful golf club is run.
Please support our new Club Captain Jody Bound and give him the support that you have given me over the last two years.

Wednesday Club
Another great day at Manukorihi, Jim Newlove had a cracker with 43 points from Graeme Parsons, 41. Robin Broadmore, Greg Fowler and Dave Yates all 40 points, Rod Andrews’ and Carl Beale 39, Richard Crowe and John Chandler finished the day with 38 points. Geoff Peters had the only 2. Jamie Clarges had a day to forget picking up the wooden spoon. Raffle winners, Don, Blue, Trevor, Tony B, Richard C and Terry Prentice.
Next week is the Waitara New World Wednesday Xmas Hamper.
The Wednesday Club is looking for someone to run the Wednesday Club for the next year, I have being doing it for the past ten years.

Congratulations to Joy Andrews who won the ladies Barry Brown closing day competition with 40 points.
The summer stableford competition starts this weekend. Starting time to be 9.30 as it fits in with the field.

PRO – TIP
To go PAST the HOLE is possibly the most logical shot to play but how incredibly difficult to do consistently. WHY?
Pressure & lack of the correct Practice Routine !
To go past the pin on the approach shots is to know your distances with each club. Most of you see the shot as the best shot that you can hit & then not hitting it 100%. you fall short !
So know your distances & then take 1 more!
On your chipping & putting, my old boss used to say “if you don’t go past the hole when you are practicing you’ll never go past the hole under pressure !!” Another big tip !!
